Cette recherche sur l’exercice de la profession d’instituteur en milieu rural, procede par une analyse documentaire et une enquete par entretiens avec les enseignants exercant dans ce milieu. Ces derniers sont selectionnes de maniere raisonnee suivant leur longue experience dans les ecoles rurales. Ils sont interroges sur leur lieu de travail dans cinq ecoles primaires de village reparties au sud, a l’ouest, a l’est, au nord et au centre du pays. L’analyse des donnees collectees montre qu’en milieu rural, la profession d’enseignant du primaire est une experience particuliere caracterisee par quatre parametres : la prise de fonction dans une localite sans commodites modernes, la rencontre d’eleves enracines dans les cultures locales, la tenue de classes adaptees a l’effectif d’enseignants dans l’ecole et la participation au developpement local.
