Abstract
L’objectif de cette contribution est de réfléchir au lien démocratique qui unit représentés et représentants du point de vue des émotions. Nous privilégierons une approche historique pour rendre compte du cas français. Selon un premier modèle, les émotions sont strictement encadrées au sommet de l’État. Ce modèle n’a évidemment pas disparu, mais il est concurrencé depuis quelques années par un modèle fondé sur le relâchement partiel, y compris au sommet de l’État, des contraintes de sang-froid. Le politique n’est plus seulement celui qui perçoit les émotions de la foule et qui sait les traduire en actions publiques; il est celui (ou celle) qui les éprouve avec intensité. Il s’émeut comme tout un chacun face aux drames collectifs et il se réjouit lors des liesses collectives; il peut même assumer publiquement des émotions personnelles liées à la carrière politique ou à la vie privée.
