Abstract
Dans l’œuvre de Verlaine, Sagesse traduit un tournant politique majeur. À ce titre, le recueil a une importance au moins égale au projet socialiste des Vaincus qui a occupé l’écrivain de 1867 à 1874. La conversion religieuse s’allie alors à un changement de manière, au point de jeter le discrédit sur les « vers sceptiques et tristement légers » de la période antérieure.
