Abstract
En mars 2010, une exposition intitulée « Juifs et Haïtiens : une histoire oubliée », organisée à Montréal, présenta la relation entre les deux communautés comme née d’une « dette d'honneur » contractée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : l’asile offert par le gouvernement haïtien aux juifs européens forcés à l’exil. Dans le but de faciliter la réinstallation de ces réfugiés, le président américain Franklin Roosevelt convoqua en juillet 1938 une conférence intergouvernementale dans la ville française d’Évian. Suite à cette conférence, la République d’Haïti, invoquant les idéaux de la révolution de 1804, accepta d’étudier la possibilité d’accueillir 50 000 juifs. Cet article propose d’étudier la nature du « don » relié à la notion de « dette » qui unit juifs et Haïtiens et également de comprendre les motivations historiques qui poussèrent le gouvernement haïtien à faire montre d’hospitalité envers un peuple jugé « indésirable ».
