Les missionnaires-colonisateurs « gouvernementaux » entre Église et État, 1911-1936

Abstract
À travers l’étude du groupe des missionnaires-colonisateurs gouvernementaux, fonction créée en 1911 par l’épiscopat et le gouvernement du Québec, cet article révèle de l’intérieur les mutations de l’arrimage Église-État, fait de tensions et d’ententes, dans la mise en oeuvre des politiques de colonisation. Dans ce milieu, le statut de prêtre-fonctionnaire s’avère avantageux à plusieurs égards pour les deux parties malgré son ambiguïté face au politique. L’évolution des attributions de ce groupe propose une compréhension inédite du contexte et des facteurs qui mènent à l’abolition de la fonction en 1936, ainsi que de la signification de ce changement dans la dynamique Église-État en matière de colonisation.
