Dans Questions de vie ou de mort, Jonathan Glover fait de la critique de la doctrine des actes et omissions la pierre angulaire de ses positions en éthique appliquée. Comment soutenir en effet qu'un acte et une omission, lorsqu'ils aboutissent exactement aux mêmes conséquences, se voient attribuer une valeur morale différente? Cet article s'attache à montrer que refuser la doctrine des actes et omissions revient à adopter la notion utilitariste de responsabilité négative. Notamment développée par Peter Singer, dont Glover fut le professeur à la fin des années 1960, l'idée de responsabilité négative implique qu'un agent moral est non seulement responsable de ce qu'il fait, mais aussi de ce qu'il ne fait pas, justement en raison du fait qu'il a omis d'agir. La réfutation de la doctrine des actes et omissions amène Glover aux mêmes conclusions que les défenseurs de la responsabilité négative. À partir de cette intuition, nous allons tenter de montrer que l'opposition entre la responsabilité négative et la doctrine des actes et omissions constitue en fait le cœur de l'opposition entre le conséquentialisme et la déontologie : chacune en serait le principe métaéthique fondamental. Cependant, nous allons aussi essayer de souligner que la responsabilité négative et la doctrine des actes et omissions ne sont pas parfaitement symétriques. Au terme de cet article, la responsabilité négative sera toujours loin d'être définitivement assise, car ses implications restent problématiques, mais elle sortira renforcée de la comparaison.
