Le troisième chapitre de Questions de vie ou de mort de Jonathan Glover est consacré à la doctrine du caractère sacré de la vie. Dans cette contribution, je propose d’analyser la critique gloverienne de la sacralité de la vie dans son contexte d’apparition. Lorsque Glover écrit ces pages, en 1977, l’affirmation du caractère sacré de la vie est récurrente dans les débats, publics et scientifiques, en Angleterre comme aux États-Unis. Si un certain consensus semble exister à son propos, notons cependant que l’expression « sacralité de la vie » est très rarement examinée. Jonathan Glover est l’un des premiers philosophes à s’engager dans une telle enquête et à montrer les limites de l’affirmation du caractère sacré de la vie. Dans son analyse, il se propose de remplacer les parties défectueuses de la doctrine, c’est-à-dire celles qui ne résistent pas à l’analyse rationnelle. Sa contribution se révèle de première importance non seulement pour la critique de la doctrine de la sacralité de la vie, mais encore pour le développement de la bioéthique et de ses arguments théoriques.
