Abstract
Dans les Pensées, Pascal veut convaincre son lecteur que le christianisme — ou plus précisément le jansénisme — représente la vérité : afin de mener à bien son projet apologétique, il utilise une rhétorique particulière, la rhétorique de l’efficacité et de la force, destinée à faire entrer la vérité dans l’esprit de son destinataire. Concrètement, Pascal va utiliser six épithètes — vrai, véritable, seul, unique, petit et grand — qui reviennent de manière récurrente tout au long des Pensées. Ces termes, hérités d’une longue tradition littéraire chrétienne, vont se charger de connotations très différentes en fonction des noms qu’ils vont compléter. Dans les Pensées, ces six épithètes ont une fonction commune : promouvoir la vérité du christianisme face à la misère de l’homme sans Dieu. Par voie de conséquence, ces termes vont avoir une fonction essentielle dans le projet apologétique de Pascal.
