Dans l’ouvrage intitulé Genre et jeux vidéo (2015), Fanny Lignon réunit douze contributions par des chercheurs de la France et d’ailleurs, invités à se pencher sur l’intersection du genre et des jeux vidéo. Ce sujet étant relativement neuf en France, ce sont des spécialistes francophones soit des jeux soit du genre qui ont dû envisager l’autre objet d’étude en partant du leur. Lignon a également obtenu des traductions de plusieurs articles d’abord écrits en anglais. En général, ces auteurs s’attachent moins aux conditions de production des jeux qu’aux jeux eux-mêmes et à ce qu’ils engendrent. Alors que la science-fiction n’est pas un objet d’analyse en soi, les manières d’aborder l’intersection du genre (sexuel, identitaire) et des jeux vidéo sont porteuses d’enseignements pour l’intersection des mêmes jeux et de la science-fiction. Les références fréquentes à des jeux relevant de la science-fiction et du fantastique rappellent d’ailleurs la centralité de la science-fiction dans l’imaginaire des jeux vidéo.
