Abstract
Few studies have examined the factors contributing to sexual sadism, and even less research has validated theories of sexual sadism. The aim of the present chapter is to propose a developmental model based on theoretically relevant factors associated with severe sadistic behaviours. Aversive experiences during childhood (e.g. neglect and abuse) are at the very foundation of severe sadistic behaviours. Juvenile antisocial behaviours and narcissistic traits are strongly related to the development of severe sadistic behaviours. In our model, there are three paths to sadistic behaviours: the disinhibition path, the schizoid path, and the narcissistic-meanness path.
