Le fœtus vivant est un « objet d’étude » relativement récent pour la médecine : depuis les années 1960. La mise en place de techniques de tests prénatal de dépistage et de diagnostic proposé aux couples ou aux femmes enceintes, afin de détecter in utero des maladies particulièrement graves incurables au moment du diagnostic et d’origine génétique, a suscité une réflexion éthique toujours présente. Jonathan Glover apporte à cette réflexion une contribution de premier ordre. Elle donne notamment toute sa place à l’examen des conséquences directes et « latérales » dans l’évaluation éthique d’une pratique. Après avoir présenté dans un premier temps le questionnement de Glover sur la pratique du diagnostic prénatal, élaboré sur plusieurs décennies, cette contribution aborde le moment de l’histoire du diagnostic prénatal dans lequel nous sommes à présent caractérisé par une pratique dite « non invasive » du diagnostic prénatal et par l’avènement d’une médecine génomique. Dans ce second moment, la démarche gloverienne attentive aux conséquences d’une pratique est reprise afin d’appréhender les enjeux propres de la période contemporaine et souligner que l’absence d’invasivité éthique ne met pas fin aux questionnements éthiques.
