A Case study of the Ethics and Religious Culture Program: The Need for Ongoing Teacher Education
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This co-authored article examines the potentials and challenges of teaching the Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC) Program in Quebec. Though in its tenth year of implementation, sparse research or scholarly work exists that includes the voices of in-service secondary teachers in assessing the program at the ground level. As such, this article incorporates the accounts and research conducted by the authors, one of whom is an experienced ERC teacher and Head teacher of Ethics and Religious Culture. Additionally, using a phenomenological theoretical framework, this article highlights the findings of a qualitative study of ten ERC teachers. The findings point to several consistent themes that teachers grapple with in regards to the curriculum, pedagogy, and lack of professional development initiaitves in this area. Finally, we conclude by suggesting ways in which teacher education for ERC teachers can be tailored to work with the tensions of the program, particularly in the area of ongoing professional development.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
