Abstract
Autre « troisième voie », comme l’indique son appellation, l’Action libérale nationale (1934) de Paul Gouin résume la politique des années 1930. Référant au thème de l’action, qui est un mot clé du premier quart de siècle (« Action » française, sociale, catholique, intellectuelle), empruntant au programme du Parti libéral, au pouvoir depuis 1897, dont la réputation s’érode et auquel il enlève des membres, ce nouveau parti entend enfin donner voix au nationalisme de l’époque. La jeunesse nationaliste des Jeunes-Canada et de L’Action nationale se rapproche de l’Action libérale nationale, qui sera toutefois flouée par Maurice Duplessis à l’élection de 1936. Le mouvement nationaliste, né au tournant du siècle contre « l’esprit de parti », s’était voulu « au-dessus des partis ». Voilà qu’il se rapproche de la politique partisane et qu’il devra à nouveau s’élever au-dessus des partis. Le manifeste de l’ALN a la caractéristique de passer des théories socio-économiques abstraites au programme concret de gouvernement. Il préfigure tantôt des réformes que le gouvernement d’Adélard Godbout (1939-1944) voudra mettre en œuvre, tantôt des projets qui figureront au programme de la Révolution tranquille.
