Abstract
In the summer of 2018, the newly elected Conservative Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, swiftly repealed the most widely consulted upon curriculum in the history of the province: the 2015-revised sex education curriculum (Ontario Ministry of Education 2015a; 2015b; Benzie & Ferguson 2018). The framing of this move in the media sheds light on the impacts of populist rhetoric and its surrounding public discourse on critical thinking. Drawing from interviews with key stakeholders in the sex education debates in Ontario, which were completed prior to the repeal, and critical discourse analysis of major print media coverage of the Conservative government’s move to reinstate the 1998 curriculum, this presentation examines misinformation surrounding sex education in Ontario, its exacerbation within a post-fact era, and the implications of the precarious state of sex education in Ontario on critical thinking, healthy decision-making, and sexual citizenship.
