Abstract
Il est temps de reconnaître que les monuments et les œuvres d’art périssent souvent de mort violente en Afrique, qu’ils soient brûlés, enterrés, brisés ou jetés à l’eau. Bien que richement illustré pendant la période coloniale, l’iconoclasme est profondément ancré dans l’histoire du continent, et ce de façon continue, comme le montrent les études de cas puisés en Afrique orientale et centrale, en Éthiopie et en Afrique du Sud. Cet essai passe en revue la littérature émergeant sur le sujet et s’appuie sur de nouvelles recherches menées au Nigéria et dans la République démocratique du Congo. Parmi les thèmes abordés, on peut citer l’aniconisme (l’opposition aux représentations figuratives), l’impact de la période coloniale et l’avènement de meneurs africains charismatiques qui rendirent populaires les manifestations de destruction et de désacralisation, l’iconoclasme par procuration, les monuments, les artistes-iconoclastes, la relation entre l’iconoclasme et le musée.
