Du corps de la Duchesse enceinte, dévorant des abricots sur scène, dans la première scène de l’acte II, à la main tranchée dont se sert Ferdinand pour effrayer sa sœur (4.1.50), en passant par les effigies de cire, simulacres des corps morts d’Antonio et de ses enfants (4.1), Webster met en scène le corps dans tout ses états dans The Duchess of Malfi. Dans sa réécriture de la nouvelle de Painter, Webster a volontairement insisté sur la présence des corps dans leur dimension matérielle et biologique, ce d’autant plus que l’art théâtral qu’il pratique est un art vivant, reposant sur les corps des acteurs incarnant des personnages sur scène. Dans la pièce de Webster, le corps souffrant est omniprésent. Mais on décèle également une ambivalence du corps considéré à la fois comme matrice et tombeau, et parfois même comme point de rencontre du masculin et du féminin, rappelant alors la figure de l’hermaphrodite. Cette ambivalence du corps est à rapprocher de l’attitude contradictoire du dramaturge Webster envers son art, le théâtre.
