Abstract
Cet article est issu d’une communication livrée au colloque de l’Association internationale des sociologues de langue française (AISLF) tenu au lac Beauport peu avant sa publication. Il cherche à concevoir en théorie l’identité des Canadiens français devenus depuis peu Québécois. La conscience nationale et la conscience de classe font ici office de notions utiles pour rendre raison de la « société globale » qui donne son visage au Québec. Comment se combinent ces deux notions à cette fin ? Dans une société en voie de se libérer de la domination dont elle est l’objet depuis des lustres, l’appartenance ethnique prend-elle le pas sur l’origine sociale conçue en termes de classe sociale ? Sous ce jour, les francophones et les anglophones peuvent correspondre en théorie à deux classes sociales mues par différentes consciences nationales. La théorie développée en la matière se fonde donc sur les consciences en présence et cherche à débusquer à ce niveau les « conflits et les contradictions » à l’œuvre2 afin d’expliquer sous ce mode comment les classes sociales, la société et l’identité font corps. Sur ce plan, Rioux examine tour à tour les inflexions de cet ordre susceptibles ou non d’engendrer la conscience de soi en phase avec le Québec en voie de devenir une société globale distincte.
