Si, au moment d’écrire ces lignes, l’indépendance politique du Québec semble reléguée aux oubliettes, tout comme la sociologie critique qu’il a appelée de ses vœux2, Rioux se fait résolument optimiste et voit l’autogestion comme un moteur d’émancipation. Certes, le marché et l’économie gagnent du terrain au Québec comme ailleurs et les inégalités sociales fleurissent sous le coup de la « mondialisation » qui s’impose comme une fatalité3. Faut-il lancer la serviette ? Il importe à Rioux de ne pas baisser les bras et d’élaborer plus que jamais un projet de société capable de renverser la vapeur.Rioux avouera, bien après avoir signé cet article, qu’il affichait à cette époque un optimisme sans borne, voire une vision utopique qu’il arbore haut et fort, car sans l’utopie activée par l’institution imaginaire de la société, « il ne peut y avoir de changement fondamental4 ». La lucidité dont il fait preuve bien après avoir écrit cet article ne l’amènera toutefois pas à renier les propos qu’il y développe sous le signe de l’espoir. Il cherchera plus que jamais, dans un contexte propice, à canaliser la culture et son bouillonnement vers le changement social ouvrant sur l’émancipation des collectivités et des individus, à la lumière de la sociologie critique capable de donner le cap. La culture se révèle ici, comme toujours chez Rioux, génératrice d’autogestion, du pouvoir de créer les valeurs et les leviers requis pour agir par soi-même et être libre. Cette lecture s’avère plus que jamais utile aujourd’hui.
