Abstract
Pierre-Joseph-Olivier Chauveau (1820-1890) (DBC, XI : 194-204), futur premier ministre du Québec, futur ministre de l’Instruction publique et romancier, formule à l’occasion de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste de 1856 les composantes du nationalisme conservateur inspiré de Parent et de La Fontaine. Le texte de Chauveau annonce un discours selon lequel la langue française et la foi catholique sont les deux piliers de l’identité québécoise et se renforcent l’une l’autre. Le même Chauveau avait tenu des propos intéressants sur la France et le Canada lors du passage de la Capricieuse en 1855, qui marquait les retrouvailles officielles entre la France et le Canada français depuis la Cession et la Conquête (ces propos sont reproduits dans La Minerve du 24 juillet 1855).
