Abstract
Centered on issues surrounding the education of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, this paper will critically analyze The Right to education of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers - Report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to education (2010) UN document in light of the Syrian refugee experience in Lebanon. This paper will highlight the discrepancies between the global values intended by these documents and the local challenges that arise when implementing them. Using Brofenbernner’s (2005) ecological systems as a framework, I argue that accordance of rights in host countries is often a product of social negotiations which are situated in contexts of social values and norms, as well as political and economic considerations. The main question this paper will ask: what are the challenges to implementing the recommendations of these documents drawn from literature on emergency education?
