Abstract
Durant toute sa vie d’écrivain, mais de façon de plus en plus exclusive au fil du temps, Julien Gracq a pratiqué ce qu’il appelle une « littérature fragmentaire », composée de notes et de « notules », de cahiers et de souvenirs, de textes critiques et d’essais brefs, publiés sous la forme de carnets (même s’il ne recourt que très rarement à ce terme). Si cette écriture du fragment s’oppose, chez Gracq, à l’effort et à la dynamique de continuité qui caractérisent, à ses yeux et dans sa pratique, l’écriture romanesque, elle est aussi une façon de rendre une certaine mesure du monde, qui est aussi bien une manière de l’habiter. La préférence de Gracq pour les lieux clos et abrités, pour les instants hors du temps, pour ce qui se suffit à soi-même, pour ce qui n’est pas suspendu à une suite, trouve dans l’écriture du fragment une forme d’expression non seulement privilégiée, mais aussi la plus adéquate possible.
