En 1998 était publié l’énoncé d’un groupe de travail mixte intitulé La nutrition du nourrisson né à terme et en santé[1], rédigé par la Société canadienne de pédiatrie, Les diététistes du Canada et Santé Canada. Dans cet énoncé, l’allaitement était reconnu comme la méthode optimale d’alimentation des nourrissons. Les préparations à base de soja y étaient recommandées seulement pour les nourrissons qui ne pouvaient pas prendre de préparations à base de produits laitiers pour des raisons de santé, culturelles ou religieuses, telles qu’un mode de vie végétalien ou une galactosémie [1]. Au moment de la publication de l’énoncé, le taux d’utilisation de préparations à base de soja atteignait les 20 % chez les nourrissons au Canada, ce qui dépasse largement le pourcentage découlant des raisons précédentes. On présume que ce taux d’utilisation élevé était attribuable à l’utilisation continue de préparations à base de soja en raison d’une allergie perçue ou réelle aux protéines du lait de vache (PLV) [1], et peut-être à l’absence de préparations aux PLV sans lactose, maintenant nombreuses sur le marché.
