“Acts of self-exposure”: Closeted ‘Desire in Margeret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye

Abstract
Examining Margaret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye (1988) with Judith Butler’s gender theory reveals the unarticulated lesbian desire of the narrator. While this closeted desire may be perceived as maintaining cumpulsory heterosexuality by, once again, silencing the lesbian voice, it arguably suggests the opposite; the patriarchal, heterosexual order is continually undermined by the silent presence of another voice. The closeted desire in Cat’s Eye refuses to be (and cannot be) fixed within the patriarchal, heterosexual economy of traditional art and rebounds, unarticulated, as a liberatory gesture signifying that the individual cannot be trapped, once and for all, in a single representation.
