Abstract
L’auteur rappelle d’abord que la musique contemporaine ne se ramène pas au dodécaphonisme, mais que de nombreux compositeurs (Stravinski, Messiaen, Britten, Bartòk, Hétu, Morel, Papineau-Couture, Matton) sont encore tributaires du système tonal. S’appuyant sur une comparaison de la musique et du langage, il rappelle que la langue musicale a évolué depuis Monteverdi dans le cadre de la tonalité et que l’expérience que nous en avons repose sur l’alternance des tensions et des détentes dans le cadre de formes données. Ayant renoncé aux conventions de la tonalité, la musique contemporaine ne peut être considérée comme un langage et les oeuvres d’aujourd’hui ont perdu toute intelligibilité. La curiosité est une émanation de l’intelligence, mais la contemplation artistique relève de la sensibilité.
