We are quickly closing in on 2 yr since I was appointed as L&O's first Deputy Editor-in-Chief. My duties as Deputy EiC are multifold, but I devote most of my time overseeing special issues and virtual issues for the journal. I am honored to have been selected to serve my society in this capacity, and in my short tenure as Deputy EiC, humbled to have worked with so many exceptional authors and guest editors. In general, ASLO benefits from the publication of one special issue per year, which is provided for in our contract with Wiley. L&O special issues are an important publishing platform that allows us to explore emerging research areas and integrate research at the leading edge of aquatic sciences. Since 2015, our selection of special issue topics has focused on research that, first, would be of broad interest to the aquatic community, and, second, spans both of ASLO's topics, freshwater and marine. It is with all the above in mind, and in partnership with Wiley, that led to our three most recent special issues: (1) “Methane Emissions from Oceans, Coasts, and Freshwater Habitats: New Perspectives and Feedbacks on Climate” in 2016 with special issue editors Kim Wickland and Leila Hamdan; (2) “Headwaters to Oceans: Ecological and Biogeochemical Contrasts Across the Aquatic Continuum” in 2017 with special issue editors that included myself, John Downing, Susanne Menden-Deuer, M. Dileep Kumar, and Maren Voss; and (3) “Long-term Perspectives in Aquatic Research” in 2019 with special issue editors Stephanie Hampton, Mark Scheuerell, Matthew Church, and John Melack. The next special issue is currently being prepared and is on “Linking Metagenomics to Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemical Cycles” with special issue editors Hans-Peter Grossart, Katherine McMahon, Ramon Massana, and David Walsh. The anticipated publication date of this special issue is January 2020. Finally, because it takes an average of 2 yr to plan and complete a special issue, we will be issuing a call for manuscripts for the 2021 special issue later this spring. This newest special issue will focus on the changing biogeochemistry and ecology across Arctic aquatic ecosystems in the 21st century with special issue editors Peter Hernes, Suzanne Tank, and Ronnie Glud. Submission to special issues is open to all our members and to researchers across the aquatic community. Papers can be submitted as soon as the call is made, and manuscripts are posted online as soon as they are accepted. My other important role as Deputy EiC is to assemble virtual issues. Virtual issues are fairly new to L&O as the first one, “Top 60 Papers from the First 60 Years of L&O,” was released in 2016 under the editorship of Bob Howarth. Virtual issues are a collection of previously published papers used to showcase articles from ASLO journals centered around a specific topic. We have launched virtual issues to celebrate anniversaries, re-advertise previously published research on areas of current scientific interest, or simply to help readers find papers which are grouped together around a topic. All our virtual issues typically collate high impact and influential papers as a means to highlight L&O's past success and/or its progression through time. Under L&O's banner, we have released a total of seven virtual issues so far. Of these, I have had the pleasure to work with so many exceptional authors, dedicated guest editors, and fellow editors from Wiley and ASLO's other journals. I thank these scientists for their help, efforts, and contributions to the virtual issues. If you have not seen our virtual issues yet, they are easy to find and I would encourage you to take a look. In your browser, navigate to L&O's web page and click on the “virtual issues” tab. Our most recent virtual issues include compilations to celebrate two anniversaries. The first, “Experimental Lakes Area: 50th Anniversary Virtual Issue” with guest co-editor Michael Paterson, was released to overlap with the anniversary celebrations at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, in Winnipeg, Canada (Fig. 1). We celebrated another anniversary in October 2018, when we launched “The Hawaii Ocean Time-series: 30th Anniversary Collection” with guest editors: David Karl and Matthew Church. We also recently released a compilation of 60 of L&O's most highly cited and influential papers on stable isotope analyses. Accompanying this impressive collection of papers is a new review and perspectives paper on stable isotope analyses that was authored by four of our most cited authors (Patricia Glibert, Jack Middelburg, Jim McClelland, and Jake Vander Zanden). This open access paper is available in Early View (https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lno.11087). And finally, released very recently is a virtual issue on “The Remote Sensing of Oceans, Estuaries, and Lakes” spearheaded by L&O Methods' Paul Kemp and in collaboration with EiC's Adrienne Sponberg of L&O Bulletin and Patricia Sorrano of L&O Letters. I hope you will go have a look at these fantastic collections. So far, we have received much positive feedback from ASLO members on our virtual issues, particularly from authors who were excited that their paper was selected to be featured in the collection. It certainly appears that virtual issues can generate buzz and electrify the membership by highlighting keystone papers and past achievements. Our publisher, Wiley, tells us that virtual issues and special issues are especially well received by members and nonmembers with above average “open rates” (for virtual issues) and above average citation numbers (for special issues compared to regular issues). My hope is that members will continue to look forward to both special and virtual issues.
