Abstract
Les conditions de rédaction de Memoir, dernière œuvre de John McGahern, sont tout à fait particulières puisque l’attente de l’auteur à ce moment-là était la mort. Le titre oriente néanmoins différemment l’horizon d’attente du lecteur. C’est bien à un voyage rétrospectif qu’il semble être convié et on peut considérer ce retour sur le passé comme un moyen de tenir la mort à distance, tout en sachant qu’on n’y échappera pas. La démarche de McGahern consistant à écrire ses mémoires sur son lit de mort n’a de fait rien d’original et pourtant le texte est tout à fait surprenant. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un récit rétrospectif autobiographique, celui-ci se borne à relater une fois de plus l’enfance de l’auteur. L’enfance, moment où l’horizon semble tellement lointain.
