Abstract
Directors of Student Teaching from teacher preparation programs across Canada were surveyed and then interviewed in follow-up focus groups to determine the opportunities and barriers they encountered in placing pre-service teachers with disabilities into practicum placements. Five themes emerged, including increased incidence of pre-service teachers with mental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder; ensuring the fit between the placement school and the student; the importance of team work and communication; the possibility of non-teaching program streams; and the importance of maintaining the standards of the profession. Directors were less confident of their legal and ethical decision-making about mental disabilities, compared with their confidence related to decisions about pre-service teachers with learning disabilities and physical disabilities.
