Abstract
The publication of The Sacrifice is reconsidered as the work of a writer who early on came to view herself as a professional. Various sources (interviews, correspondence, memoirs, reviews, and scholarly articles) are used to reconstruct the historical moment that culminated in the publication of The Sacrifice. An analysis of the contemporary response to the novel, furthermore, shows the extent to which Wiseman’s rise as a writer was predicated upon an admiration for her protagonist that was felt powerfully and equally by the author and her first reviewers, who overlooked the “sacrifice” of a female character to affirm patriarchal order.
