Abstract
J.B. Priestley played a significant role in presenting the British case in World War II. In the early, desperate years of the wax, his inspirational “Postscripts” to the nine o’clock news had huge audiences, while his “Britain Speaks” broadcasts to the United States helped keep that country on side when supplies were vital. When his left-wing views antagonized Winston Churchill, however, Priestley’s broadcasts were censored, and he expressed his frustration in pamphlets and fiction. The story of his situation not only is interesting in itself, but it also dramatizes the problem of the freedom of the artist in time of war.
