Lived Experiences of Second-Career Pre-Service Teachers and Teacher Education Programs: Local and International Perspectives

Abstract
Abstract With the need to have content specific specialists within classrooms in some countries, and addressing the problem of teacher shortage in others, the recruitment and training of second-career pre-service teachers have become an integral part of teacher education programs throughout the world. These individuals are usually professionals who have spent years in their previous professions and enter teacher education programs with unique skills and attributes as well as a vast array of lived experiences. This proposed paper will explore the distinctive characteristics of second-career pre-service teachers and how their lived experiences impact how they learn within their teacher training programs. We will further comparatively analyze the local Canadian happenings as well as international perspectives on the influence of these lived experiences for teacher preparation and development. Our intent is to present recommendations as documented in the literature through best practices used in programs throughout the world.
