Abstract
Le 14 janvier 1898, Albert Carré prenait possession de ses fonctions de directeur à l’Opéra-Comique (1898-1913). La construction de la nouvelle Salle Favart — qui remplaçait celle détruite par un incendie onze ans auparavant — n’était pas encore terminée, et plusieurs salles parisiennes prêtaient la scène au deuxième théâtre lyrique parisien. Se posait alors la question du « genre représenté à l’Opéra-Comique et à son adéquation à une salle ». Dans la présente contribution, nous analyserons la manière dont Albert Carré sut faire face à l’importante crise financière que connut ce théâtre. Nous montrerons également que la première gestion de l’Opéra-Comique par Albert Carré fut le résultat d’une pratique théâtrale consciencieuse et avisée, permise par des expériences de gestion théâtrale antérieure en France et par l’observation d’autres systèmes de productions européens, notamment allemand. Nous nous attacherons enfin au bref séjour de Carré à la Comédie-Française, marqué notamment par la création d’une caisse de retraite destinée aux pensionnaires du théâtre.
