Le texte se penche sur la tempête médiatique occasionnée par la Commission d’enquête sur le commerce du livre au Québec (aussi appelée Commission Bouchard), en 1964, et sur les prises de position publiques de deux écrivains, Léo-Paul Desrosiers et Michelle Le Normand. La reconstitution des attaques répétées contre les Éditions Fides, en 1963 et 1964, permet dans un premier temps de mesurer l’ampleur de la reconfiguration du paysage éditorial et culturel québécois durant ce qu’on nomme la « Révolution tranquille ». Les deux lettres fournissent, quant à elles, un instantané de l’affolement vécu par les époux Desrosiers face à la commission d’enquête, dans le contexte plus large d’un changement paradigmatique entourant la présence de l’écrivain catholique au Québec.
