Abstract
Providing new bibliographical information about a little-known author and tracing writerly patterns in his works, this essay aims to add to our understanding of systematic relations between critical reviewing and literary reputation. The research that this article elaborates was conducted for the revision of the entry on Alexander Bicknell in the <i>New Dictionary of National Biography</i>. The article, in the process of extending and restructuring Bicknell’s bibliography, presents some steps that he took to make a name for himself in the face of a reviewing system bent on asserting its institutional authority. Although Bicknell was an energetic instrument of the book trade, he was marginalized by cultural forces that he failed to exploit for a living. Yet he came to glimpse structural reasons for his failure.
