Abstract
The journals of Prances Burney call for serious analysis. Absorbing much of her literary energy, they arguably contain her best writing. In vivid accounts, Burney, relying on the sympathy of the implied audience, constructs herself as heroine. She writes to impart shape, coherence, and meaning to the flux of experience and to soften and to solace this experience, a compulsion created by her extraordinary sensitivity. But the narrative comes to substitute for a reality that does not satisfy her inner needs. This is illustrated by a series of “courtship journals,” a pattern wishfully imposed on her material three times before it achieves consummation.
