Abstract
La destinée scénique de l’opéra de Chostakovitch Lady Macbeth de Mzensk confirme l’étymologie du mot scandale : « piège, obstacle contre lequel on trébuche ». Après avoir connu de véritables triomphes, non seulement en Russie soviétique mais dans le monde entier, l’œuvre a été, deux ans après sa création en 1934, l’objet des foudres staliniennes. À partir de 1936, le compositeur renonce à composer pour la scène. Pris dans la tenaille du totalitarisme, il parvient néanmoins à élaborer une œuvre originale d’une singulière puissance.
