À la fin de la Seconde guerre mondiale, l’industrie française de l’aluminium était à la recherche d’un second souffle. Pechiney, le leader français de l’aluminium se tourna vers l’Empire colonial. L’industrie de l’aluminium apparu comme le véritable bénéficiaire de l’hydroélectricité produite au Cameroun. Une filière industrielle prospère fut développée entre 1954 et 2003, par Pechiney, jusqu’au rachat par Alcan en 2003, puis, par Rio Tinto, en 2007. En 2014, cette dernière a décidé pour des raisons stratégiques, de céder ses parts, les répartissant, entre l’État camerounais, l’Agence française de développement (Afd) et le personnel de la compagnie camerounaise d’Aluminium ou Alucam.
