Abstract
Le titre de cet article suggère un rapprochement entre Theodor W. Adorno et l’utopie – une association qui est susceptible de rencontrer quelques oppositions. Néanmoins, l’utopisme joue un rôle central dans la critique sociale chez Adorno, bien qu’il puisse être opposé à toute concrétisation normative d’un futur social utopique. Afin de démontrer l’importance de l’utopie dans l’œuvre d’Adorno, la discussion fera référence à plusieurs passages ou périodes de sa pensée, et notamment ses réflexions critiques basées sur les travaux de Walter Benjamin, Thorstein Veblen, Oswald Spengler, et Aldous Huxley. Je choisis pour épigraphe un extrait de La dialectique de la raison : « Ce qui est en cause, ce n’est pas la conservation du passé, mais le rachat [ Einlösung ] des espérances du passé » 1 . C’est un extrait que je partage volontiers avec un autre auteur, dont les efforts pour refaçonner l’élément nostalgique et utopique chez Adorno méritent d’être réexaminés.
