Abstract
Passée à la postérité comme hôtesse d’un des plus célèbres « salons » du temps des Lumières, M me Geoffrin (1699-1777) a réalisé son ambition en s’appuyant sur une solide fortune personnelle. Elle fait très jeune et sous tutelle un mariage avec un riche veuf, mais à fortune égale. L’ascension sociale des Geoffrin s’appuie sur un socle matériel très solide, la détention de 13,5 % du capital de la Manufacture royale des Glaces, dont la prospérité devient éclatante à partir des années 1750. Grâce à une alliance sophistiquée avec un autre groupe d’actionnaires, représentants de la banque genevoise, M me Geoffrin, sans siéger au conseil de la Compagnie des Glaces, révèle trente années durant tous les talents d’une femme d’affaires veillant sur ses intérêts.
