Abstract
De Balzac à Céline et de Comte à Durkheim, roman réaliste et sociologie ont entretenu des rapports de concurrence et d’émulation, chacun usant de ses armes propres pour analyser formes et productions sociales. Ainsi, À la recherche du temps perdu se constitue largement autour de séquences qui sont autant de petits laboratoires où se donnent à lire les rapports d’individus « classés » au sein des groupes. À titre d’exemple se trouve ici étudiée une longue scène de Sodome et Gomorrhe où sont mises en présence quatre classes qui à l’ordinaire ne se fréquentent pas : haute noblesse avec Charlus, aristocratie provinciale avec les Cambremer, grande bourgeoisie avec les Verdurin, milieu des professeurs enfin. Or, Proust conçoit la séquence comme un véritable « jeu de barres », où chaque acteur cherche à prendre l’ascendant sur ceux qui sont d’un autre rang en les entraînant sur un terrain qui lui est favorable. Situation riche en quiproquos qui va culminer dans une particulière « violence symbolique » dès le moment où ce sont non plus des rangs mais des goûts qui s’affrontent.
