Abstract
Abstract A capital city is an urban area containing the seat of government for a nation‐state or subnational province or state. Capital cities built ex novo, on new sites, are high‐profile and controversial urban development projects, requiring vast resources, careful planning, and special implementation powers. New capital cities are built for regional economic planning purposes or for better defense, climate, or resiliency against natural disasters. They may be located for political considerations, on sites not identified with a dominant ethnic, language, or religious group. Leading examples of ex‐novo capital cities are Brasília (Brazil), Canberra (Australia), New Delhi (India), and Washington ( USA ).
