Abstract
Abstract Uneven economic development refers to the unequal patterns of growth and decline that emerge under capitalism, at a range of spatial scales, and that oscillate back and forth across space and over time. Marxist geographers have theorized how contradictions inherent to capitalism generate uneven development, explaining patterns of inner city decline, suburbanization, and gentrification. In the post‐1970s era of financialization and neoliberalism, uneven economic development and income inequality have intensified.
