Abstract
This thesis explores the experiences, thoughts, and struggles of second generation Canadian Muslim women based on nine in-depth qualitative interviews.The image of the Muslim Woman in the minds of many Westerners is bounded in notions of oppression, passivity, and submission.A frequent image that comes to mind is a veiled woman, cloaked in mounds of fabric.Many argue that the Western world and the Islamic world occupy opposite ends of a modem versus traditional continuum.Using Edward Said's notion of Orientalism, this thesis deconstructs and challenges the popular notion of the 'Muslim woman' and illustrates the diversity that exists within the Muslim community.A number of issues are discussed throughout this work including the experiences of the participants that emerge from being both Canadian and Muslim, the ambiguity that surrounds Canadian identity, thoughts on the Western media, experiences of discrimination, as well as the women's views on hij ab.
