Abstract
This article describes the interactions which govern the relations between cashiers and customers. First of all it highlights the existence of a myriad of power relations and thus of relationships of force which characterise the daily life of cashiers. In their encounters with the customers, which are intertwined with the social relations of class, cf sex, of race and of ethnicity, women workers are exposed to différait forms of violence from their customers : verbal abuse, physical violence, racism, sexual harassment and armed robbery. The author places this analysis in a comparative perspective between Brazil and Quebec.
