L’article XII de la loi du 7 messidor an II qui prévoyait l’envoi aux bibliothèques des titres, chartes et manuscrits « qui appartiennent à l’histoire, aux sciences et aux arts, ou qui peuvent servir à l’instruction » n’a guère suscité l’attention des commentateurs, alors qu’elle révèle, outre un point de contact éphémère entre les deux institutions de conservation, bibliothèques et archives, un renversement total d’interprétation au cours du XIXe siècle. Il y a là une référence intéressante pour l’histoire de la notion de source historique qui prend place marginalement dans l’histoire de la constitution des Archives nationales, montrant que la notion d’archives n’est pas un en soi donné une fois pour toutes, mais est soumise à variations et donc elle-même objet d’histoire.
