Paterson de Jim Jarmusch est une adaptation libre du poème éponyme de William Carlos William et ne parle que de poésie, ce qui pose un défi de taille. Comment inscrire le poétique dans une séquence de plans filmés? Dans une perspective sociocritique, cet article montre comment le film de Jarmusch indexe et retravaille certaines représentations du déclin propres à l’imaginaire social américain contemporain et repose de manière décalée ce qu’il faut bien appeler à nouveau « la question sociale ».
