La thématique des chantiers royaux constitue un élément récurrent des biographies consacrées à Saint Louis. Elle est présente dès la première Vita, écrite quelques années après la mort de Louis IX par son confesseur, le dominicain Geoffroy de Beaulieu, et se trouve ensuite régulièrement enrichie. Néanmoins, l’éclairage ainsi apporté sur la commande architecturale du roi laisse dans l’ombre certains aspects de celle-ci : les auteurs ne s’intéressent guère à la matérialité monumentale de ces édifices, et ils passent sous silence une partie des chantiers financés par le souverain. L’étude des « Vies de Saint Louis » permet ainsi de mesurer l’écart qui peut exister entre la réalité de la commande royale et l’image qu’en ont retenu les écrivains du XIIIe et du XIVe siècle, focalisée non seulement sur les établissements conventuels et hospitaliers, mais aussi sur la région parisienne.
