Abstract
Spike Jonze’s Her is about digital love, how and why this can arise, how it can function effectively as a consequence of, for example, a narcissistic disorder. The notion of ‘disappearing books’ brings to mind the film director Francois Truffaut. His 1966 film Fahrenheit 451 showed how books represent a danger to the community because of their explanatory potential. In his film World on a Wire , Rainer Werner Fassbinder showed impressively how people can deceive themselves in respect of their security and strength. In this scientific thriller, people who know a lot and who believe themselves to have influence, or control, are gradually eliminated. Woody Allen’s 1985 film The Purple Rose of Cairo comes to mind. The sound track to Her is by Acade Fire, a Canadian indie band who use unusual instruments such as an accordian, church organ or other wind instruments, to evoke a trance-like state in which, like Theodore, the audience forgets reality.
