Abstract
Abstract Drawing on popular songs and oral accounts, this article explores how the Yoruba people remember and memorialize their experiences of slavery and its impact on the people, as well as the community violence associated with slavery. The article highlights local recollection and dramatization of various modes of enslavement, anti-slavery tactics, the demographic impact of warfare and population dislocation, and the divergent experiences of slaves and slaveholders, as well as the linkages among slavery, religion, ethnicity, and gender.
