Du (M/m)entor au maître ou au guide, le tracé de la fonction de précepteur est attribué à divers auteurs qui se sont succédé dans les monarchies d’Occident, jusqu’à ce que Diderot vienne bousculer cet apparent consensus au XVIIIème s.: son évolution à cet égard est saisissante ; mais n’a-t-il pas changé de position pour des raisons liées à sa découverte de la figure de Prométhée dans le texte original grec ? Diderot n’est pas sans disciples parmi les post-modernes, y compris aux Etats-Unis.
