Abstract
Sans faire le procès de Jean Marchand, Gérard Pelletier et Pierre Elliott Trudeau, ces anciens intellectuels de gauche devenus les « trois colombes » d’Ottawa décidées à remettre le « Québec à sa place » et à lutter contre le nationalisme en voie de gagner du terrain, Rioux, avec une pointe de cynisme, retrace l’itinéraire de ce trio et l’analyse à la lumière de l’état d’arriération idéologique et politique du Québec de l’époque. Selon lui, le trio voulait que le Québec presse le pas et rattrape son « retard historique » par rapport au reste du continent. Faute de ravir le pouvoir à Duplessis, il leur fallut se tourner vers Ottawa, leurs motifs électoraux prenant ainsi le pas sur leurs motivations idéologiques. Rioux décrit dans cet article les événements qui, de fil en aiguille, ont donné naissance à la Révolution tranquille, laquelle a marqué d’une pierre blanche l’histoire de cette société en voie de s’afficher comme telle, le Québec.
